Midl Innerkofler

Mountains in her blood

The life story of Midl Innerkofler

As the granddaughter of mountaineering legend Sepp Innerkofler, she not only climbed many peaks herself – she also witnessed countless mountaineering stories. Born in 1936, she was already exploring the Sexten Dolomites at an early age. Midl even successfully climbed the Big Peak in her sixth month of pregnancy – and for the last time at the age of 75. A true child of the mountains! Her stories bear witness to courage and also make visible the role of women in the lives of great mountaineering legends. The summit successes of her grandfather Sepp Innerkofler were undoubtedly also due to her grandmother, who pulled the strings behind the scenes. The first ascent of the Little Peak via the north face was achieved by the pioneer not least thanks to the homemade “Potschn” sewn by his wife. Midl also experienced some dark chapters in South Tyrol’s history: a childhood under Fascism and the Option, when her family had already decided to relocate to Germany but, at the last moment – warned by a guest’s Christmas card reading “everything is lost” – remained in their homeland. A life full of fascinating stories, full of mountain peaks.
