Holidays at the foot of the Three Peaks
Your route to the landmark of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage.
The striking mountain formation of the Three Peaks is not only a popular photo motif and the symbol of the Dolomites par excellence – the rock towers also appear in the Sexten coat of arms, together with a chamois – or, in local dialect: Gammaze. They are an integral part of Sexten’s identity. Anyone spending their holiday here should definitely visit the Drei Zinnen! On foot from Fischleintal valley – or more comfortably with the Three Peaks shuttle via Misurina in the neighbouring province of Belluno.
How do you get from Sexten to the Three Peaks?
The good news: there are several ways to reach the Three Peaks in the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage from the holiday region of Sexten. Depending on surefootedness and fitness, there are different ascent options in the Three Peaks Nature Park – and an easy, family-friendly hike from the Auronzo hut.
- The moderately difficult hike leads uphill from Fischleintal valley through Altensteintal valley, past the Lakes Bödenseen below the Paternkofel to the Three Peaks hut at 2,405 metres. This is the most direct route – partly steep but with more than rewarding views of the Three Peaks. Ascent: approx. 3 hours.
Those with more time and hiking enthusiasm can first hike from Fischleintal valley to Zsigmondyhütte hut and continue to Büllelejochhütte hut at 2,528 metres – and from there descend to Drei Zinnen hut. This circular hike, returning via Altensteintal valley to Fischleintal valley, is also known as the Sexten hut circuit. Total walking time: approx. 8 hours
-
In the summer months, there are daily shuttle services (reservation required) from Sexten via Toblach, Schluderbach and Misurina up to Auronzo hut at 2,333 metres. From here, an easy hike leads directly to the Three Peaks. Perfect for families with children and anyone who is not particularly sure-footed. Hiking time: approx. 3.5 hours.
- The least known ascent route to the Three Peaks leads via Innerfeldtal valley between Sexten and Innichen to Dreischusterhütte hut and further along Dolomitenhöhenweg high path no. 4 to the Three Peaks hut at 2,405 metres. This hike is demanding and includes some difficult sections. Ascent: approx. 4.5 hours.
A view of the Three Peaks
Yes, you can also catch a glimpse of the famous Three Peaks from Sexten! Where? At the top station of the Three Peaks cable car. Since 2014, this gondola lift has connected the two ski and hiking mountains Helm and Rotwand. And its name is no coincidence: once at the top, you stand directly opposite the pale peaks of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage– with a view of the Three Peaks!
The partner municipality Zermatt and the Matterhorn
Mountain villages and their landmarks. What the Three Peaks are for Sexten, the Matterhorn is for its Swiss partner municipality Zermatt. Another striking rock formation of worldwide fame. In the Haus der Berge, Sexten dedicates an entire floor to the close mountain friendship between Sexten and Zermatt. Both places are shaped by life on and with the mountains, both look back on a long Alpine history. Visitors can experience the ascent of the Matterhorn and the normal route to the Big Peak up close via a VR documentary.
