Architecture in Sexten
Alpine building between tradition and innovation.
A walk through Sexten with a keen eye for the different architectural styles – from traditional ancestral farms to innovative, award-winning buildings – reveals a completely different way of telling history. It is about style and spirit of the times, economic conditions and the perception and use of space. Join us on an architectural journey through the village of the Three Peaks!
Traditional farms and ancestral farms
Traditional farms still shape the appearance of Sexten today. Typical features include a rectangular layout, a combination of masonry and timber construction, pitched roofs and wooden balconies with red geraniums. These farms also tell stories of past prosperity: the greater the proportion of stone and brick, the better the family’s economic situation usually was. Many old farms have been carefully renovated and now bear the “Erbhof” designation, indicating over 200 years of family ownership.
Clemens Holzmeister and Rudolf Stolz
In the 1930s, architecture in Sexten became an expression of style and lifestyle. With Clemens Holzmeister, the village brought in a renowned architect who set new standards and made Sexten known in professional circles. Together with fresco painter Rudolf Stolz, distinctive buildings were created in the monumental, linear style of the “Neue Sachlichkeit”, later also referred to as “Tiroler Moderne”. A well-known example is the historic Hotel Drei Zinnen in Moos.
Innovative building in Sexten
The openness towards high-quality and sustainable architecture remains alive in Sexten to this day. This is also reflected in the fact that the architecture award “Neues Bauen in den Alpen” has been held here. New buildings therefore follow high standards. A new generation of South Tyrolean architects has left visible marks and initiated a new era of building. Examples include the HAUS DER BERGE by Delueg Architekten, the Info Point at the Kreuzbergpass by Pedevilla Architects and several projects by the local Plasma Studio.
