Holidays in the spirit of sustainability
Sexten – a tourism destination with GSTC label.
Sexten goes sustainable! Step by step, with a clear goal in mind – just as is typical for mountain people. This time, however, the aim is not to reach a Dolomite peak, but to achieve certification as a sustainable tourism destination. Since March 2025, Sexten and the Drei Zinnen Dolomites region have held the highest sustainability label, GSTC (Global Sustainable Tourism Council) – and yet it still holds true: the journey is the destination.
What makes Sexten a sustainable destination?
Sustainability is not a goal, but a path consciously taken. The GSTC certification shows that Sexten is already well on its way – as a village and as a tourism destination. In concrete terms, this means that the municipality and tourism providers actively take responsibility, act consciously, evaluate new projects with regard to environmental, cultural and socio-economic aspects and work day by day to make the destination’s offering more sustainable.
Here is an overview of the topics:
- Guests are encouraged to travel by public transport and to get around locally by bus, ski bus or bike. Many hotels provide their guests with the Südtirol Guest Pass and rental bicycles. Information on hiking tours and winter sports deliberately includes references to environmentally friendly accessibility.
- Topic hotspot management! The Drei Zinnen Dolomites region is working to make the most popular places and natural treasures accessible in a sustainable way and to raise awareness among visitors for responsible access. For example, bookable shuttle services are available from Sexten to the Three Peaks and to Lake Pragser Wildsee.
- Sexten focuses on the use of local products. Many agricultural goods are produced directly in the village, often by certified organic and environmentally friendly farms. Zero-kilometre quality, promoted and supported by accommodation providers and restaurants.
- Official events in Sexten are organised and implemented as GreenEvents whenever possible. This means not only complying with strict environmental requirements, but also actively involving both guests and locals.
- The South Tyrol ClimaMunicipality programme supports municipalities in developing and implementing a sustainable energy and environmental management plan. Sexten has been awarded the ClimaMunicipality SILVER certificate, meaning that the village is on a good path in terms of energy efficiency.
- The global CleanUP trend has also reached Sexten – and every single day of the year has been declared an official CleanUP Day. How does it work? Anyone who wishes to actively contribute to keeping the mountain environment clean can collect the necessary equipment at the tourist office and pick up litter along the trails while hiking or walking. Upon returning to the starting point, there is a small reward for the effort.
