Gabriel Tschurtschenthaler
Blind trust
Between courage and trust – Gabriel’s path to the peaks
Born in Sexten, Gabriel Tschurtschenthaler is a therapeutic masseur and holder of a blue belt in jiu-jitsu, a martial art originating from the Japanese samurai. Without question, someone who constantly seeks new challenges. While climbing rock and ice. While working in the forests of Sexten and in his urban daily life in Vienna. So far, so good. The decisive detail: Gabriel has suffered from visual impairment since childhood, meaning that depending on light conditions he perceives either vague outlines or almost nothing at all. No reason for him not to keep tackling new peaks. He is accompanied by friends he can quite literally trust blindly. The core of this well-coordinated rope team includes Daniel Rogger from Sexten and the two mountain guides from Osttirol Vittorio Messini and Matthias Wurzer. It all began with the ascent of the Little Peak via the Innerkofler route. Further climbing tours of increasing difficulty followed – until eventually the Comici-Dimai route on the north face of the Big Peak was also achieved. A heartfelt project in the 7th grade of difficulty! “It’s certainly no disadvantage if you don’t see every abyss,” jokes the mountaineer from Sexten. In 2022, he travelled to Patagonia with his Osttirol friends, where the three-person rope team conquered Aguja Poincenot and the supposedly “impossible” Cerro Torre. Further adventures are already being planned. Good climb!
