Sexten is home to several interesting museums and exhibitions that combine history, art and mountain culture. Informative, interactive and with moments that give you goosebumps. These are places of remembrance, wonder and dialogue – from historical sites and visionary projects to artistic treasures. Take a look around!
Open-air museum Anderter Alpe
The open-air museum Anderter Alpe on the Rotwand (2,150 m) brings the First World War in the Sexten Dolomites to life. Along the former front line between Austria-Hungary and Italy, trenches, positions and barracks have been preserved. Information boards and guided tours by the ONLUS association Bellum Aquilarum explain the history and its impact on Sexten. The exhibition “Unvergessen”, unforgotten, and the Mitterberg fortress complement the experience.
Reinhold Messner Haus
The Reinhold Messner Haus on the Helm is not a traditional museum, but a visionary place of encounter. The former top station has been transformed by Reinhold Messner and his wife Diane into a centre for sustainability, art and culture – and into the new home of the mountaineering legend. In addition to personal items from Messner’s expeditions, the house hosts lectures, discussions and exhibitions, inviting visitors to reflect on humanity’s role in the mountains.
Rudolf Stolz Museum
Located in the centre of Sexten, the Rudolf Stolz Museum is dedicated to the South Tyrolean painter Rudolf Stolz (1874–1960). Over 160 works – including sketches, fresco designs, watercolours and studies – provide insight into his work. The museum also features works by his brother Albert Stolz and complements the collection with temporary exhibitions in summer. It is a place of art and remembrance that vividly reflects Sexten’s cultural identity.
