A view of the Sexten Sundial

The timeless natural spectacle in the Sexten Dolomites.

Impressively beautiful and completely unmoved by the passing of time, it stands there, drawing every gaze: the Sexten Sundial in the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage– one of the most striking skylines ever created by nature. The rock peaks of Neuner, Zehner (Sexten Rotwand), Elfer, Zwölfer and Einser rise high above Sexten and together form the imposing stone timepiece. On clear days, the position of the sun above these characteristic peaks allows the time to be read.
How does the Sexten mountain sundial work?
The best place and time to observe the course of the sun over the Sexten Sundial is along the main road between the Haus der Berge and the village of Moos – and in winter! At that time, the sundial corresponds quite precisely to the time of day. If you follow the pavement from the Haus der Berge towards Moos, you will soon reach a marker made of dolomite rock – the so-called Zeitstein. Here, the mountain peaks are explained in relation to the course of the sun.

Sundial Challenge
The peaks of the Sexten Sundial have always provided motivation and fascination, inspiring people to break records and push beyond personal limits or even the limits of imagination. The people of Sexten are truly creative in this respect! For example, Greti Rogger, the innkeeper of Büllelejochhütte hut, and her son Daniel managed to climb all five peaks of the sundial in only two days. There is hardly a more intense way to engage with the passing of time!
