Conference about the future of the Dolomites
“10 Years of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site: What Now?”
On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Dolomites’ inclusion in the list of UNESCO World Natural Heritage sites, EURAC Bolzano, IDM South Tyrol, the UNESCO Dolomites Foundation, the office for Nature Parks and Sesto tourist information association will be holding this conference.
New goals, new directions
Mountain people are always on the lookout for new ways. It is part of their nature. 150 years ago the first alpinists were still devising new strategies for conquering the supposedly unassailable summits of the Sesto Dolomites. Today, since the pale tors have been opened up to the masses, in the village of the Three Peaks people are looking for ways to bring about a sustainable future for the UNESCO world heritage site. That’s why at the beginning of October every year experts from a variety of disciplines – mountain climbers, representatives of the tourism industry, researchers, businesspeople and environmentalists – meet to discuss joint objectives and strategies for protecting the mountains. The symposium is organised by the Sesto Tourism Board, the Dolomites UNESCO Foundation and Eurac Research. Their objective is to enhance this unique rocky landscape and to discuss opportunities and possible risks entailed by the increasing development of the region. In this way, they aim, in a manner of speaking, to pack a rucksack over the years that will accompany the Dolomites step by step on their way into the future. Onwards and upwards!
